Slow Money Funds Local, Sustainable Food
E-mail Print

Building a localized, sustainable food system is no easy, or cheap, task, and while the momentum around sustainable food is surely gathering, more of that momentum needs to be monetary if real change is going to take root. The problem is, our economic system shares a lot in common with our industrial food system. Both have become very disconnected from local communities and very disconnected from the earth. We invest our money in the intangible hoping for fast, and double-digit returns, just as we plant as many genetically modified super seeds as possible to give us the fastest, largest crop yield. Neither seems very sustainable, especially in the midst of the recession, and increasingly we are looking towards more local, community-based models for both our economic and agricultural health.
