School Gardens Yield More Than One Lesson

In math class, students calculate how much mulch is needed to help seed growth.

In history, students study the vegetables grown by Native Americans -- squash, corn and beans.

In kindergarten, children explore the life cycle of pumpkins.

Lessons are as abundant as the crops at Providence Elementary School in Fairfax, one of about a dozen county schools with an onsite garden.

"Basically, it's built around SOL standards," said teacher Alan Borhauer, referring to Standards of Leaning testing. Borhauer helped lead the effort to plant the garden, which lies in the school's courtyard.
