Oakland’s sustainability effort was initiated by the City Council in 1997.

In 2005, Mayor Jerry Brown joined 50 mayors of the world's largest and most visionary cities as an original signer of the United Nations World Environment Day Urban Environmental Accords, pledging that Oakland would implement 21 action steps over seven years to build an ecologically sustainable, economically dynamic and socially equitable future for its citizens. For the legislation recognizing the signing, please see the Urban Environmental Accords Resolution (PDF)

The Urban Accords have informed the priorities of the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability.
