A harvest sharing program, rutabaga cooking classes, plus a chance to turn a gourd into a work of art -- the Vallejo People's Garden yields all this plus a lot of vegetables, too.
The community organic garden began as a barren, hardened plot on Mare Island, and later took root as an idea.
And now -- after thousands of volunteer hours -- the garden is yielding its first summer crops, including green peppers, cabbage, onions, broccoli and gourds.
